Oval Ethiopian Opal Earrings

The modern discovery of Ethiopian Opals only occurred over the last few decades. However the Oldest Opals found in a Kenyan Cave dating back to roughly 4000 BC were likely Ethiopian Opals. Anthropologists believe Man's Earliest Ancestors used these Opals to make Tools. Fast forward to 1994 the discoverery of the Ethiopian Opal deposit in the Shewa Province. These precious Opals were inside Volcanic Rock nodules, and had Brown, Reddish/Brown or Orange Colouring.

In 2008 a second find of a deposit in the Wollo Province near Wegel Tena.

These Opals come in attractive Colour Types White, Crystal, Fire and the occasional Black Opals. These Gems are most commonly known by several different Spellings, Welo, Wollo and Wolo on the International Markets.
